Indications for Preparing a Compounded Medication

Is the prescription for a drug that is a safe and effective medication but no longer available from a drug company?

Does the patient have an allergy to a component in the commercial formulation (preservative, etc)?

Does the patient need a special dose that is unavailable?

Does the patient need to take several medications?

Would the patient be more adherent if fewer pills or capsules needed to be taken?

Is the patient unable to take the drug as formulated but could take it in another form?

Would a flavor or other additives make the drug more palatable to the patient?
