Indications for Prophylaxis Against Pneumocystis Carinii in HIV Patient

Is the patient receiving HAART?

Has the patient had a CD4 lymphocyte count < 200 per µL?

Current CD4 lymphocyte count

Number of months that the CD4 count has been above 200 per µL

• a history of thrush (oropharyngeal candidiasis)?

• a history of unexplained fever for more than 2 weeks?

• recent substantial unexplained weight loss?

• a prior AIDS-defining event?

• a prior episode of any type of pneumonia?

• a history of previous Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP)?
