Risk Factors for Hand Deformity in Patient with Leprosy

Are you examining the hand of a patient with leprosy?

Does the patient perform activities with the hand in an unsafe manner?

• loss or significant reduction in sensation for one or more digits?

• evidence of scarring or other signs of recurrent trauma to the hand?

• chronic and recurrent infection?

• calluses on skin exposed to abnormal pressure while trying to compensate for loss of function?

• ischemia of the digits?

• open wounds?

• infected wounds?

• an abnormal pinch?

• a loss of spherical and/or cylindrical grasp?

• partial absorption of one or more fingers?
