Evaluation

Are you evaluating a patient with HIV disease and skin lesions?

Does the patient circumscribed dermal nodules, that may range from red to yellowish-brown in color?

Are nodules seen juxta-articular, over the buttocks, over extensor surfaces and the Achilles tendon?

Is there evidence of a serum paraproteinemia?

Are cultures of the lesions negative for micro-organisms?

Is the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) elevated?

Does a skin biopsy from one of the lesions show?

• leukocytoclastic vasculitis?

• nodular accumulation of histiocytes, spindle cells and neutrophils?

• areas of fibrinoid necrosis?

• areas of dense fibrosis?

Is there another condition (Kaposi's sarcoma, bacillary angiomatosis) that can explain the findings better?
